EnerGuide rating system

The EnerGuide Rating System is a national system managed by Natural Resource Canada in collaboration with its regional partners for the purpose of rating the energy performance of houses.

Each home works as a system.  It is made up of many different parts including the outside walls and roof system, the windows and doors, the furnace that you are using and even the hot water tank and the light bulbs you use. Changing any one of the systems in your house can have an affect on how moisture, air and heat or cold interact. Any change can have a detrimental affect on the house as a system and in turn your comfort.  Bergren Energy understands how your house works and can help you make informed decisions on renovations or upgrades you can do to your home to make it not only more energy efficient, but comfortable as well.

A home energy audit consists of our Energy Advisor coming to your home and performing an in depth analysis of each of the above systems and then generating a report based on their findings.

What is involved?

  • We will perform a comprehensive assessment of the building envelope: windows, doors, ceilings, walls, foundation. A visual inspection and measurement is done to determine surface area, insulation levels, dimensions/volume and the orientation (to accommodate for solar gain) of your home.
  • We will perform an analysis of your current  heating system, air conditioning, ventilation system and water heater.
  • A Blower Door Test is performed to determine the air tightness of your home and identify air leaks.
  •  We will walk with you throughout your home to identify common areas of air infiltration.
  • A depressurization test will be performed when required to test for combustion spillage.
  • An energy model of all the components will be done to determine the energy efficiency of your home.
  • Each home owner will receive a Home Owners Information report, an EnerGuide Label stating the current energy use of their home as well as the Green House Gas emmisions they are producing.  They will also receive a Renovation Upgrade Report showing potential savings for recommended upgrades.

A followup evaluation should be performed if:

You are  applying for government grants (In Alberta CMHC mortgage insurance rebate is the only option presently) https://www.cmhc-schl.gc.ca/en/co/moloin/moloin_008.cfm

OR, If you have made major improvements to the energy efficiency of your home after the initial energy evaluation, which would require a new rating and label.
